Jay Electronica - Exhibit A (Transformations)

... Brief intermission... From a Bedroom in St Louis officially drops Thursday, August 6... I'll leak a few more tracks before then, though...

Just the concept behind Jay Electronica's Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge) got me hyped... he sampled the soundtrack to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (maybe my favorite Kaufmann movie) and spit over it for 9-plus minutes... adding no drums whatsoever.  Apparently, he's been in the stu with Just Blaze and the results are promising:

... i spit that Kurt Vonnegut...

Daniel Lovecraft - Sex on Fire

And here.  We.  Go.

First leak off of From a Bedroom in St Louis: "Sex on Fire"

Click the arrow on the right to download... full mixtape coming soon!!

Blu (thanks Tyler)

So my old friend Tyler took issue with the hip hop credibility of prior posts (lol) and insisted that I check out Blu.  I did.  His shit is nice... a California dude with crazy wordplay and an affinity for dusty, gritty soul samples.  He perfectly captures the underground grind in this video:

If you're feeling it, here's some more.  Thanks Tyler!!

New Colin Munroe

If you haven't already downloaded Colin Munroe's mixtape, you should.  It's not earth-shattering, but it's pretty dope and definitely worth a couple listens (anyone who does something with a Dylan track gets props from me!!)  This is some new Colin, featuring two rap legends:

If you've been slow to peep the highlight off of Colin's mixtape, Piano Lessons, then do it here.  The video's great...

The Conservative Media

I like Barack Obama.  I knocked on doors in St. Louis for him, trying to get people out to the polls on his behalf.  I tend to trust a lot of the policies he has put into place, but I think many are open to goodhearted conversation and debate.  However, the antics in this following clip, examples of a pervasive, mean spirited kind of racism lurking in the mainstream media, are not only uncalled for, but really disturbing.  This is disgusting:

Somewhere along the way, Glenn Beck has surpassed all other neo-con talking heads, as the most depraved... who honestly watches this guy??

Synecdoche, New York

Synecdoche, New York flew way under the radar, especially for the directorial debut of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, someone who I aspire to be like in my own art.  It's one of the most spellbinding films I've ever seen, walking some kind of wonderful line between hilarious interactions and sad, beautiful truths.  Jon Brion (co-produced Kanye's Late Registration) has done the soundtrack for most of Kaufman's movies and he's on point again in this film (peep: "Little Person").  Plus, it stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Michelle Williams...

I promise it will be unlike any movie you have ever seen before; go cop it on DVD!!  Here's the trailer:

Look out for the track "Go Hard," coming soon off of From a Bedroom in St Louis; the song was inspired by the movie and references Kaufman's body of work...

Getcha Some...

I feel like Big Sean's shit has been hit or miss, thus far, but this song's definitely fire, from the beat to the lyrics to Hype's visuals:

Lights Please

So, I just got put on to J. Cole.  This dude is ridiculous.  Peep "Lights Please," the joint off his mixtape The Warmup that got him signed to RocNation after Jay-Z heard it.  Best track I've heard in a minute:

From a Bedroom... is on the way!!

Greetings

Hello, plugged-in world.  There is something a bit surreal about writing this, my first blog entry.  Here I am, staring at an empty screen, unsure of what to say, wondering if anyone is listening at all in the endless chaos of cyberspace.  It is all very existential.

My name is Daniel Lovecraft.  I make music.  I've had various love affairs with a few specific artists, from Bob Dylan to Jay-Z, the Doors to Lauryn Hill, Bright Eyes to Black Star.  These sounds, among countless others, have helped shape the music I create, from folk ballads to chic rap.  As I begin to release music into the ether, I hope you find it diverse and engaging, as I stumble along this path, most likely showing both promise and missteps along the way.

My first release will be coming very shortly.  It's entitled From a Bedroom in St. Louis: A Mixtape.  Download it for free, on this blog or on myspace.  Listen.  React.  Send me an email (dlovecraftmusic@gmail.com) or post a comment.  Let me know how it makes you feel, what it makes you think, and what the hell you think of it after all.  Music is on the way.

Sincerely,

Daniel Lovecraft
